The Open Palette: A Creative Space for Young People to Breathe, Connect and Create
SEND the Help is thrilled to announce The Open Palette — a brand-new art therapy project in partnership with Emma in Colour and Barnstaple Library, proudly supported by the Devon County Council Growing Communities Fund.
The Open Palette is a gentle, inclusive art workshop series designed for young people aged 14–18 (up to 21 with an EHCP) who are not currently in full-time education. Whether this is due to SEND, anxiety, burnout or trauma, these sessions offer a safe and creative space to explore self-expression through art — without pressure, expectations or judgment.
What to Expect
Each session introduces a new art medium — from paint and collage to sculpture and mixed media — guided by Emma in Colour, a local artist with experience in therapeutic and inclusive practice.
The sessions are designed to be low-demand and low-stress. There are:
No awkward ice-breakers or introductions
The option to bring a parent, carer or supporter if that feels right
A private room with easy access to toilets and a quiet space
Snacks and refreshments provided, with the option to bring your own food
It’s all about creating a calm, welcoming environment where young people can be themselves — supported by facilitators who truly understand the barriers that come with neurodiversity, anxiety and re-engagement after time away from education.
Why Art Therapy?
Art therapy offers a gentle way to explore emotions, build confidence and rediscover joy in learning through creativity.
It can help improve self-esteem, emotional regulation and social connection — all without the need for words.
At SEND the Help, we believe that inclusion means meeting people where they are. The Open Palette reflects that vision: a space that doesn’t ask young people to fit in, but instead gives them room to belong.
