SEND the Help delivers a range of calm, inclusive activities designed to support emotional regulation, confidence and skill-building for children and young people who may struggle in busy or traditional settings. Our offer includes Open the Palette, a gentle creative programme using art as a tool for expression and regulation; Mindful Monday Movement, which focus on movement, grounding and emotional wellbeing; and practical Skills Days that help young people build independence, confidence and life skills in a supportive, low-pressure environment. All sessions are SEND-informed, trauma-aware and led by experienced practitioners, with participation always voluntary and paced to individual needs. We also offer and SEND advice sessions for parents and carers who need clear, informed guidance around education, support options and EHCP processes.Take a look at our gallery here. The Crisis-Forced EHE Project

 

​Crisis-Forced Elective Home Education: Evidence, Lived Experience, and Systemic Failure

​

Across England, increasing numbers of children are recorded as being Electively Home Educated (EHE). For many families, however, this is not a positive or voluntary choice. It is the result of prolonged unmet need, school-based trauma, and the failure of statutory systems to provide suitable education.

I have written an evidence-informed paper examining what I describe as “crisis-forced elective home education” — where families withdraw children from school because no safe, appropriate, or lawful educational provision is being made available to them.

The paper draws together:

  • anonymised family case studies

  • statutory duties under education law

  • existing national research and commentary

  • professional and lived experience of the SEND system

It explores how children are being pushed out of education, while being misclassified in official data as voluntary home-educated, masking the scale of systemic failure.

Parliamentary Petition: Recording the Reality Behind EHE

​

Alongside this paper, I have lodged a formal petition with the House of Commons calling for urgent action to address this issue.

The petition asks the Government to:

  • require Local Authorities to record why a child moves into Elective Home Education

  • distinguish between voluntary home education and education withdrawn due to unmet need

  • audit unlawful practices linked to off-rolling, delayed support, and failure to provide education

  • improve transparency and accountability within SEND and inclusion systems

Without accurate data, children who are effectively out of school due to systemic failure remain invisible — and policy continues to be shaped by incomplete evidence.

Why This Matters

Children who are not accessing education due to unmet need are not “missing by choice”.
They are being failed.

This work exists to ensure that:

  • families are heard

  • evidence is documented

  • and policy discussions reflect the reality on the ground

It is written not as an academic exercise, but as a necessary contribution to an urgent national conversation.
